Turner to Cézanne Opens at the Corcoran after Successful Run at the Everson
Cezanne paintingA remarkably successful exhibition for the Everson Museum of Art, Turner to Cézanne: Masterpieces from the Davies Collection, National Museum Wales had museum-goers lined up and down the block, waiting to catch a glimpse of 53 impressionist and post-impressionist paintings and works on paper. The best attended show in the Everson’s history, Turner to Cézanne helped revitalize tourism in Syracuse, drawing visitors from Buffalo, Rochester, Utica, Albany, and Ottawa and enabling partnerships between the museum and numerous local cultural organizations. The exhibition recently opened at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., where it will be on view through April 5.

Two Contemporary Exhibitions Added to AFA Exhibition Program
Richard Bell paintingTwo monographic exhibitions have been added to the AFA’s roster, both curated by AFA Senior Curator Maura Reilly. Richard Bell: Uz vs. Them will feature the work of Australia’s most talked about contemporary artist. Bell describes himself as "more an activist than an artist," and his politically charged paintings and films address the conflict surrounding the appropriation and exploitation of Aboriginal art by mainstream Australian artists.

Ghada Amer imageGhada Amer: Happily Ever After will be the first touring retrospective of this multimedia artist’s work. In addition to Amer’s well-known canvases embroidered with erotic motifs, the exhibition will include sculptures, photographs, videos, installations, and collaborative works with thematic commonalities. Gender clichés, the representation of female sexuality and pleasure, and western perceptions of Middle Eastern culture will be thoroughly examined in Amer’s work.

For further information on either of these exhibitions, please contact AFA Senior Curator Maura Reilly at 212.988.7700 ext. 244 or mreilly@afaweb.org.

Development
As the AFA reevaluates its mission and opportunities for growth, it has undertaken a crucial strategic planning process. Thanks to AFA Trustee Scott Dahnke, the Parthenon Group, a highly regarded Boston-based strategy consulting firm, will not only be the consultants for the plan but have generously agreed to conduct their work on a pro-bono basis over the next two months. This is equivalent to a donation of services in the amount of approximately $300,000.
