Rolling Hills and Satanic Mills:
The British Passion for Landscape

Beginning May 2014*

Selected from the remarkable collections of National Museum Wales by Tim Barringer, Paul Mellon Prof-essor of the History of Art and Director of Graduate Studies at Yale University, and Oliver Fairclough, Keeper of Art at National Museum Wales, Rolling Hills, Satanic Mills: The British Passion for Landscape will offer audiences in the United States a rare opportunity to follow, in a single span, the rise of landscape painting in Britain. The exhibition unfolds a story that runs from the Industrial Revolution, through the eras of romanticism, impressionism, and modernism, to the postmodern and post-industrial imagery of today. While showcasing masterpieces from the museum's collection, the exhibition will also offer new insights into the cultural history of Britain and the history of art, as well as the development of landscape painting in Wales.

Broadly chronological, the exhibition will be divided into six thematic sections, allowing for surprising and thought-provoking juxtapositions. Major oil paintings will be seen alongside works on paper drawn from the museum’s exceptional holdings of watercolors, drawings, and photographs. Rolling Hills, Satanic Mills will include a diverse selection of works by artists who found inspiration in the British landscape, including Joseph Wright of Derby, Thomas Gainsborough, Joseph Mallord William Turner, John Constable, Oskar Kokoschka, Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue with essays by Barringer and Fairclough addressing such subjects as the picturesque and the sublime; eco-criticism; cultural geography; collectors and changing taste; and the relationship between art and industry. In addition, the catalogue will include entries on each of the works in the exhibition by  the curatorial staff of  National Museum Wales.

Rolling Hills, Satanic Mills: The British Passion for Landscape will travel to four venues.

*This is when the tour is expected to begin. The exact date will depend upon the needs of the participating institutions.
