Indonesian Gold
Beginning February 2011*

Lorem Ipsum, is the curator of the exhibition.

This will be the first comprehensive survey in the U.S. to focus on Indonesian gold, an important and complex component of Indonesia’s cultural tradition. One hundred and thirty-two dazzling examples dating from the eighth century through the nineteenth century will include objects ranging from those incorporated in burial offerings, to those used in courtly settings, to those employed in religious practices.  Beyond their beauty and skilled workmanship, these gold objects —including jewelry, ritual objects, coins, and images of deities—will offer insights into social hierarchy, ritual practices, political power, ceremonial traditions, and religious symbolism in Indonesia.

Asian art scholar Helen Jessup will curate the exhibition, selecting the works from the most important public and private collections in the United States, Europe, and Southeast Asia.  The catalogue accompanying the exhibition will include texts by Jessup, as well as by additional authors who will address, among other topics, the cultural influence of gold in Indonesia, the technical properties of gold, and literary references to Indonesian gold.

Indonesian Gold will offer a singular opportunity to promote and publish a wealth of new scholarship—much of it gleaned from the important excavations of the last few decades—and show a wide audience a captivating aspect of Indonesian art.

Indonesian Gold will travel to three venues.

*This is when the tour is expected to begin. The exact date will depend upon the needs of the participating institutions.
