The Printed World of Pieter Bruegel the Elder
January 1999–November 1999

Barbara Butts, guest curator, is a curator of prints, drawings, and photographs at the Saint Louis Art Museum.

Though he himself etched only one print, Pieter Bruegel the Elder (ca. 1527/28–1569) was an artist whose work was commonly transferred into print by other artists in the sixteenth century. This exhibition presented a selection of sixty-five etchings and engravings that translated Bruegel's paintings into print and illustrated the rich and varied imagery of the Flemish master. Organized chronologically by Guest Curator Barbara Butts, the works depicted landscapes, biblical stories, parables, and allegories.

Exhibition Itinerary: Middlebury College Museum of Art (January 8–March 7, 1999); Bayly Art Museum (March 26–May 23, 1999); Elizabeth Myers Mitchell Art Gallery (September 17–November 14, 1999); and Memphis Brooks Museum of Art.

The exhibition is organized by The Saint Louis Art Museum. The national tour is organized by The American Federation of Arts.
