Wolfgang Laib: A Retrospective
October 2000–January 2003
Since the mid-1970s, German sculptor Wolfgang Laib (b. 1950) has created sculpture and installations using marble and organic elements such as milk, pollen, rice, and beeswax. This retrospective, curated by Klaus Ottmann, introduced the complete range of the artist's work to audiences in the United States for the first time. The exhibition traced the progression from Laib's early signature pieces, the "milkstones" and pollen pieces, to his large-scale sculptural installations. A large selection of Laib's rarely exhibited drawings completed the survey. Exhibition Itinerary: Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (October 26, 2000–January 22, 2001); Henry Art Gallery (February 25–May 6, 2001); Dallas Museum of Art (May 29–September 2, 2001); Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (October 5–January 6, 2002); Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (January 27–May 19, 2002); and Haus der Kunst, Munich (November 1, 2002–January 19, 2003). The exhibition is organized by the American Federation of Arts. In-kind support has been provided by Parmalat USA. |
