Maxfield Parrish: 1870–1966
June 1999–August 2000

Sylvia Yount, guest curator, is curator of collections at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts

Curated by Sylvia Yount, this critical survey presented approximately 130 easel paintings, mural studies, drawings, prints, ephemera, and material artifacts of Maxfield Parrish (1870–1966), one of the most popular artists of this century. The exhibition considered Parrish’s prolific seventy-five-year career and his reputation among colleagues, critics, and the public at large in the context of such issues as the growth of new art markets, artistic hierarchies, and the shaping of public taste.

Exhibition Itinerary: Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (June 19–September 25, 1999); Currier Gallery of Art (November 6, 1999–January 23, 2000); Memorial Art Gallery (February 19–April 30, 2000); and Brooklyn Museum of Art (May 26–August 6, 2000).

The exhibition is organized by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the American Federation of Arts. Major funding has been provided by The Henry Luce Foundation, Inc. Additional support is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.
