Shamans, Gods, and Mythic Beasts: Colombian Gold and Ceramics in Antiquity
October 1998–January 2000

Armand J. Labbé, guest curator, is an anthropologist and director of research and collections at the Bowers Museum of Cultural Art, Santa Ana.

Curated by Armand J. Labbé, this exhibition examined traditional themes and styles of ancient Colombian ceramics. The 133 masterworks were drawn from public and private collections in the United States and from museums in Colombia. Ranging in date from 1200 B.C. to 1600 A.D., the ceramics included figural jars and urns, musical instruments, and ritual paraphernalia. Also on view were thirty-two exceptional gold pieces that shared many of the design motifs and symbolism found on the ceramic figures.

Exhibition Itinerary: Michael C. Carlos Museum (October 31, 1998–January 10, 1999); Mingei International Museum of World Folk Art (January 31–April 11, 1999); Orlando Museum of Art (May 1–July 11, 1999); Frick Art Museum (July 29–October 3, 1999); and Bowers Museum of Cultural Art (October 29, 1999– January 9, 2000).

The exhibition is organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Bowers Museum of Cultural Art. Travel assistance is provided by American Airlines. Educational materials are made possible by The Brown Foundation, Inc., Houston.
