From the Sun King to the Royal Twilight: Painting in Eighteenth-Century France from the Musée de Picardie, Amiens
August 2000–June 2001
The collection of eighteenth-century art at the Musée de Picardie, Amiens, is notable for its numerous paintings commissioned by Louis XIV, Louis XV, and Louis XVI. The approximately seventy canvases included in this exhibition curated by Matthieu Pinette provided an overview of French painting from the end of the reign of the Louis XIV, the Sun King, to the fall of the monarchy, and underscored variations within the established genres of history and religious painting, landscape, portraiture, and still life. Works by François Boucher, Jean-Baptiste Chardin, and Jean-Honoré Fragonard, among others, were included. Exhibition Itinerary: Columbia Museum of Art (August 26–October 29, 2000); the Frick Art & Historical Center (November 16, 2000–January 14, 2001); Joslyn Art Museum (February 4–April 1, 2001); and Santa Barbara Art Museum (April 20–June 17, 2001). The exhibition is organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Musée de Picardie, Amiens. |
