Watteau and His World: French Drawing from 1700 to 1750
October 1999–May 2000

Alan Wintermute, guest curator, is senior specialist of Old Master paintings at Christie''s, New York.

The drawings of Antoine Watteau (1684–1721) have been admired, coveted, and collected with a degree of enthusiasm accorded to no other artist of the French School. The nearly forty drawings by Watteau included in this exhibition curated by Alan Wintermute demonstrated the full range of the artist's work as a draftsman. While focusing primarily on Watteau, the exhibition also featured approximately thirty-five sheets by artists who surrounded Watteau as mentors, contemporaries, and pupils its due. The exhibition examined their role in influencing Watteau and extending his legacy.

Exhibition Itinerary: Frick Collection (October 20, 1999–January 9, 2000) and National Gallery of Canada (February 11–May 8, 2000).

The exhibition is organized by the American Federation of Arts. It is made possible in part by The Florence Gould Foundation. The catalogue is supported in part by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation.
