The National Arts Club
Artist Amy Cutler, whose exquisitely detailed narrative paintings and drawings have garnered increasing attention over the last few years, spoke about her body of work at the second lecture of the AFA's fall season of ArtTalks.
Inspired by mass media, U.S. military survival manuals, nature books, fairy tales, Japanese woodblock prints, Persian miniatures, and her own personal experiences, Amy Cutler creates enigmatic works depicting women, animals, and hybrid beings engaged in dreamlike activities. She has participated in numerous exhibitions in the United States, including one- and two-person shows at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City; and most recently a major solo survey at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Her work has been featured in several important group exhibitions, including ARS 06 at KIASMA, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki, and the 2004 Whitney Biennial, and is represented in the collections of many major institutions, among them, the Whitney Museum of Art; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; and the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles.
Born in 1974 in Poughkeepsie, New York, Ms. Cutler studied at Cooper Union, where she received her BFA. She also attended the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Städelschule, in Frankfurt, Germany, and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
