One of the most important artists of the last 50 years, Alex Katz discussed the blending of abstraction and representation that marks his renowned portraits and landscapes.  Katz also talked about his upbringing in Queens as the child of Russian immigrants with a rich family history.  He described honing his art skills at a young age by painting his own backyard and eventually receiving a scholarship to Cooper-Union, where he finished at the top of his class.
