Matthew Ritchie
April 2007
The National Arts Club

At the April 25th ArtTalk, the featured speaker was Matthew Ritchie, an artist included in Time magazine’s “100 Innovators of the New Millennium” for his explorations of “the unthinkable or the not-yet-thought.” In his ambitious attempt to represent the universe and the structures of knowledge and belief we employ to interpret and visualize it, Richie brings together, in his work, elements of physics, cartography, biology, and religion.

During his hour-long lecture, Ritchie discussed artists who have influenced his work as well as his thoughts about where his art fits in the historical continuum. His lecture was accompanied by a powerpoint presentation that included charts illustrating complex, multi-discipline theories and ideas, as well as installations of his work at the Andrea Rosen Gallery in New York and on the walls of the aquatic facility at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At the reception following the question-and-answer session, audience members had the opportunity to talk directly to Mr. Ritchie.
