Beatriz Milhazes
November 5, 2008

In the first lecture of the 2008-09 ArtTalks season, Beatriz Milhazes spoke about her artistic techniques and inspirations and engaged the audience in a lively discussion. Milhazes, who lives and works in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is best known for her vividly colored abstract paintings, collages, and prints. Working within the Pattern and Decoration movement that arose in the 1970s, Milhazes creates richly textured works that are generally built by the layering of repetitive motifs, first painted on large plastic sheets and then transferred onto canvas. Her work has been featured in numerous prestigious exhibitions around the world and most recently has been displayed at the James Cohan Gallery in New York.
