ArtTalk: Richard Phillips
Wednesday, March 9, 2011, 6:30 p.m.

In his ArtTalk, Richard Phillips gave an engaging overview of his work, beginning with the genesis of so much of it—his spotting stacks of discarded fashion magazines on the sidewalk. He talked about how he “repurposes” images and stressed, among other things, his interest in the role of art, and painting in particular, in our culture.

Richard Phillips has a striking signature style that derives from his distinctive use of popular images—often from advertising, fashion spreads, and erotic media—that he translates into drawings and then luscious, oversized realist paintings executed through a traditional process. With fashion, media, and film collaborations, Phillips’s imagery has achieved a level of pop recognition outside of the art world.
